I was thinking in interactive timeline of refugees arriving to Australia in the past 5 years, comparing that to key events that had happen in the past 5 years, and comparing the total refugee numbers to cities in Australia. with pics and things
This is my final mashup, its follows the same previous layout i updated. It has three collums for the main information, the main information out of the three is slightly larger becuase i feel it is more important.
There are a few things i didnt get to work in my mashup that i would of like to have in there. For game new, game reviews and videos i would of each have a search sections, so people can search for older videos or reviews Making it quicker to navigate rather then looking through the whole list. I would of had a proper images search, so people dont have to leave the page and search for the a game on google.
The mashup have quite a few similarities to the tsunami layout, however the i feel that this is the best layout for the information that the mashup is providing. The three main information is best kept at the top. The three columns would not work horizontaly becuase the section of information is to small, and there would be to much scrolling which making it harder and frustrating for the user to use. Small information in the colums would waste a lot of space on the right side of the screen because it is only a breif description of the article it links to. Twitter feeds i thought was good to place at the botton of the mashup becuase each feeds are only about 2 - 3 lines which didnt affect the navigations of tweet searching. Images are placed at the botton to help with widescreen images, and the little thumbnail images look and work better when placed in a horizontal setup.
Overall this is a web mashup i would use, it suits my needs as something simple which provides the information i only want, in one spot.

After looking at my current layout I’ve decided to change it a bit. The reason why i chose to change the layout was a few reasons, when i go to a gaming news site such as ausgamers, the main reason is for reviews of new games. I’ve made the review columns a lot larger then the rest. The reduction of the video section did not effect my layout becuase the title of the trailer is still very visable. I also put the image section running on the right side across the bottom because you could see more thumbnails on the horizontal slider of the next or previous image. I also added a twitter feed search becuase twitter is very popular now, and i use it as well for quick updates.
And it still is a very easy layout to find the information you want.
First time working with PHP this week, it was very difficult for me to keep up this was the best i could do. Using PHP was very confusing, but i do understand that PHP is a lot more powerful then badges, probably why its more confusing.
So what is PHP?
PHP stands for Hypertext Pre-Processor, PHP is a server-side scripting language for creating dynamic Web pages. Unlike HTML where you can edit it in pretty much any word processor or code program and open it in your favorite browser to view it.
This is my version using PHP, it has a gaming news feed combined with a images search!

PHP Vs Yahoo Badge
PHP give the user a greater control over the users website rather then using Yahoo badges.
- Powerful language, give the use more control over there website
- Must be on a server to be edited
- Very difficult for first timers
Yahoo badges are good for creating quick information, however it is limited by Yahoo, for example the only way to have user input on the website is with PHP.
- Very easy to use
- Fast information
- Hard to stylise
- Cannot send information to the badge, only receive.
This is my version of week 3 tutorial, its pretty simple, it takes RSS feeds from my favorite gaming sites such as news and reviews. All the gaming sites i use both have areas i don’t care about like ads, reviews for consoles i don’t use and general layout. So a mashup with just the information i want is very useful.

Pipes is a powerful composition tool to aggregate, manipulate, and mashup content from around the web. Working with yahoo pipes makes mashup a lot simpler, reduces coding to a minimum :D. Yahoo pipes have heaps of tutorials on there website, uploaded by users which i thought was very useful
and a cool beginners Yahoo pipe video :)
So this is a quick really basic layout i made. The final mashup layout might be different from this. But this is just a simple layout that shows how simple i want the site to be.
For this mashup i need RSS feeds from game sites such as ign, gamespot or ausgamers. For the video section i will need a pipe that collects related videos from youtube. For the image section i would need a pipe that allows user inputs for image searches.
I want that mashup layout to be really simple, but also effective, the reason i am doing a mashup for video games is because there are to much in between in video game sites. To have multiple information such as new and videos, you would need to open them in a new tab, and that is still isn’t effective. The reason i choose this layout was becuase of the simplicity of the look, and at the same time has everything a gamer needs when looking for reviews, news and videos. This may not apply to every gamer, however as a gamer my self a site that has everything i enjoy to read, or watch in the one place really works for me. And no Ads!
A web mashup is a web site that takes difference sources of information or functionality from one or more websites and present it in a different, unique way. A good mashup is where the most important information to you is cut out from 1 or many site and all brought together in one simple layout, without all the in between info you actually want.
Mashups i like!
Twitter Vision is a interesting example of a web mashup. It combines Google maps with live Twitter feeds to show where people are posting there tweets around the world. I really liked it because it is really well done, very unique mashup, and it was really simple, fun to just look at.
Flickr Sudoku is another interesting one, it’s the game Sudoku, but the numbers used in the game are Flickr search images.
This is a Yahoo Pipe i made, its very simple, it is a RSS feed for the site IGN which i will be using in my final Mashup
